Dr Choong Yean Yaw obtained his basic medical degree at University Malaya in the year 1990. He had his postgraduate training in Ophthalmology at the Department of Ophthalmology, Hospital Kuala Lumpur from 1992 to 1996. He obtained a Master’s degree in Ophthalmology from the National University of Singapore and was admitted as a Fellow to the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh in the United Kingdom in 1996. Subsequently, Dr. Choong spent 18 months of sub-specialized training in cornea, anterior segment and refractive surgery in the Corneo-Plastic Unit and Eye Bank of the Queen Victoria Hospital, East Grinstead, UK.
Currently, he provides comprehensive services in the field of corneal and external eye diseases and has special interest in managing complex ocular surface disorders and dry eyes. He was the first surgeon in the country to perform deep anterior lamellar keratoplasty (DALK) for corneal diseases and has performed up to 200 cases of corneal collagen crosslinking therapy for Keratoconus since 2007.
Dr. YY Choong’s quality medical care has earned him unprecedented recognition throughout his field of specialization and the ophthalmic community locally.
Dr. Choong has been actively involved in teaching fellow colleagues and junior members in his field of specialization. Other than giving lectures and talks, he also performing live surgery demonstration on cataract surgery, glaucoma implant surgery, phakic implant surgery and laser refractive surgery (Lasik & ASA) both locally and abroad.
Since 1999, Dr. Choong has been involved in various voluntary charity eye surgery activities. He is a regular visiting eye surgeon for Ayurdana Hospital in Sagaing Hill, Myanmar. Together with Lions Club and other charity organisations, centre for sight contributed about 70 free cataract surgery to the poor and needy every year. He also participated in a number of different eye camps organised by various organisations over the last ten years.
Dr. Choong serves as a panellist in several consultative bodies in the Ministry of Health advising the government on health policies related to ophthalmology. He is a key opinion leader for the ophthalmic industry and is highly regarded in the country. He is a co-editor and contributor of the Malaysian National Transplant Registry on cornea transplantation. He is also a clinical tutor for the School of Optometry in University Kebangsaan Malaysia and Twintech College.
